Well, you can install fax services on your PC from windows (it comes inbuilt). Go to Control Panel -> Add remove programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components, select Fax services and click install and follow the steps.

I personally use a program called MightyFax which is not free, but perfect as a fax machine alternative.

Go to Start > Help and Support and type 'Using fax', without the quotes, in the search box for the step by step.
