Their early works are more than often their greatest works. Then they sell out when they go mainstream. why? Examples: Blink 182, AFI, and some others I cant remember at the moment.

depends on the band. not all sell out. some where commercial to begin with. BLINK and AFI sucked from the get go. afi not sooo much, but still suck. to answer your question though i think bands see they can make more money and they run outta ideas. metallica used to be really good and they suck now. same with korn. some bands are just awesome and they stay that way. AC/DC, Tool, dropkick murphys, B.L.S.(although they where formed from another band). i think it depends on what's goin on in the bands life i suppose.

I agree, I love Linkin Park's earlier stuff but can't stand their new cd.
