When adding and subtracting, if signs are different, then you subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number. If signs are the same, the you add and keep the sign.
When multiplying and dividing, if signs are different, then the answer is negative. If signs are the same, then the answer is positive.

Addition: -1 + 2 = 1
Adding a negative and a positive follows like this. It's pretty straight forward.
Adding 2 negatives: -1 + -2 = -3
This is the same as adding 2 positive numbers, just with a negative sign.
SUBTRACTION
2 negatives: -1 - -2 = -1 + 2 = 1
When you add 2 negatives, change the sign of the minus sign into a +, then change the sign of the integer after it so -2 becomes +2. My teacher used to call this the "Double Pencil Sweep method" or DPS for short. Yeah, she was a little crazy.
Positive and negative: -1 - 2 (apply the DPS: - sign becomes +, 2 becomes -2) = -1 + -2 = -3.
Same goes for 1 - -2 (apply DPS, - becomes + sign, -2 is now positive) = 1 + 2 = 3.
2 positives: 1 - 2 = -1. Again, use DPS.
MULTIPLICATION
2 negatives muliplied together gives you a positive value. 1 negative and 1 positive remains negative.
DIVISION
Same rules as multiplication.

As for positive - negative = negative as you said, the rules for subtracting a negative number make the negative number positive (DPS method), the answer will always be positive:
2- -3=5
3- -1=4
100- -87=187
You said you're doing equations? My guess is they look somewhat like this: x+4= -2
Ok, in this equation, the goal is to get the unknown value, x. YOu have a negative integer on one side, and a positive on the other. You want to isolate x becuase that is what you want to solve. Take 4, and subtract it from the left side and subtract it from the right side. What you do to one side you do to the other. Why subtract? You always do the opposite function of what it is originally. Originally, 4 is being added onto the left side. In order to isolate x, you have to remove the 4 from that side. In order to remove it, you must subtract it so it becomes 0 on that side. The equation now looks like:
x = -2 - 4
Use the DPS method becuase it is a subtraction problem now: -2 + -4 = -6
x = -6 is your answer. A way to check if that's correct (and works ALL THE TIME), is substitute -6 into x into the original equation so it looks like -6 + 4 = -2. Solve -6 +4, you get -2. -2 is the same on the other side so the answer is correct.

addition:
a) if the signs (positive, negative) are the same, add normally and use the sign that was of both numbers.
b) if the signs are different, subtract without looking at the signs. Then the answer adapts the sign of the number with the greatest absolute value (value of a number without its positive or negative restraints).
Subtraction:
a) Leave the sign of the first number the same, change the subtraction sign to an addition sign, change the second number to its opposite (positive to negative, negative to positive). Then follow the addition rules.
Multiplication and Division:
a) If the signs are the same, the sign of the answer is positive. If the signs of the addends are different, the answer's sign is negative. Multiply or devide normally.

Integers are numbers on a number line Infinity to (negative) -Infinity. An Integer May NOT be a Decimal.
That's all I know for a 6th grader!
