Dr Death Senior is planning to do up the wooden panelling underneath his roof gutters.

As a first step, he wants to remove all the paint, strip it down to the bare wood.

He's wondering whether to use:
A) A chemical paint stripper
B) A hot air gun or
C) A sander

On these wooden panels at the moment there is a layer of varnish, and then several layers of gloss house paint, the oldest paint layer being about 40 years old, the newest about 10 years. He wants to get down to the bare wood, with minimum fuss (being up ladders at the time) and also without causing any damage to the adjacent plastic gutters.

Which method would you recommend?

Sanding will release large quantities of white lead into the air creating a hazard for the person doing the sanding and everyone around. A heat gun will to the job slowly. Chemical stripping is probably the most effective approach. Some, such as Citristrip, are less noxious than MEK but it will require multiple applications. There is a product that is membrane backed that you stick on and let sit a substantial length of time that will do the job is one pass, might what to Google "paint strippers" and see if you can find it and other ideas.

Use an angle grinder and sand all that old paint off there. I did an entire house like this last summer. It is very labor intensive and very messy but looks great and is cheap.

If it was me I would use a electric sander equipped with a HEPA filtered vacuum attachment .
Don't forget paint that old will contain lead.
