You will probably have better luck asking this question in the horoscope section.
However, I'll try to help you out. The cycles you refer depend on what body rules each of the zodiac signs. For example, Cancer is ruled by the moon which goes through all the signs of the zodiac every 27 days (approximately). Leo is ruled by the sun, which goes through the zodiac every 365 days. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter which goes through the zodiac every 12 (approx) years, etc.
Most people who answer questions in this section do not believe in astrology, however, astrology and astronomy were the same thing 2000 years ago so astrology and the basic concepts are a part of astronomy history.

A zodiac is nothing but a constellation that the Sun passes through while it travels on the ellipitic.
the amount of time it takes from the sun to travel through the constellation is how long the zodiac cycle is.
