I suffered from major depression last year. Over the summer, I got in my car...got to 100mph and seriously considered driving into a tree. My little sister's face appeared in my mind, and I pulled over and turned the car off. I cried uncontrollably for two hours before I found the courage to even turn the keys again. At that moment, I realized that life is worth living, family and friends are everything, and there are so many people that are more unfortunate than I am in this world. I'm now on my way to a doctoral program for psychology. I plan to help children and adolescents.

i live by myself a long way from any town. never thought much about it. any way back last May on a Sunday i got up and was grilling. i have been in perfect health all my life with only a few trips to the doc. well that day i took a swallow of tea and got choked, swallowed air so to speak, when i finally got to where i could breath i done it again, i forced myself to cough and when i did i tore the inside of my throat real bad. i threw up some blood and got a little scared. tried to call a few people that live close by but no one answered, started to call 911 but because i was standing in a large puddle of blood by then and figured i would be dead by the tI'me they got there i decided to drive 32 miles (stopping every 2 minutes to throw up) to the nearest hospital. it was two days later when i came to and it made me realize that living by yourself is not a very smart idea, one year later im still here alone but really trying to solve it

On September 11 2001 (otherwise known as 9/11) I found out I had Breast Cancer and within 8 days had been in surgery and had a radical mastectomy. I am well now and normally a jolly happy person, it forced me to realise that the things I used to worry about were insignificant and to try and live my life to suit me and not everyone else.

For me it has to be joining the army purely because at 17 you are pretty quiet and joined up and from then on my life changed because i was told what to do when to do it and then I changed for the better grew up fast and learned to respect people and it has made me a much better person.

Forget all this hype about all squaddies being *** holes they are brought through life with better values than people of today.

Before this I was generally quite an unemotional person, rarely cried, very reserved, not a great deal of empathy.
