The space shuttle has one for landings. It would be unreasonably expensive. Very few plane crashes could be averted with a parachute. You'd need to redesign and reverse the passenger seats so the passengers could survive the acceleration. But it's a good idea and good thinking.

Thing of the size of the parachute for one person. Think of the size of a parachute that would hold 300 or 400 people. Now throw in the weight of the plane.

Besides, there aren't enough plane crashes to make it financially worthwhile. If you are flying somewhere, you are more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the airport than in a plane crash.

they could even have an emergency exit or allow the pilots to pack heat and have parachutes above the seats instead of those masks wihich somn i heard from fight club that those get you high so you dont care that you die or some **** like that

some planes do come with parachutes... and i would think they could come off...

i just remembered, i dont know where thet are sold but most cirrus... or sumtin like that... have parachutes for the plane built in.
they have prop and jet versions i think...
