okay okay. you all pretty much answered it for me. thanks but then i have to ask..why did the elves have to leave? why didn't they just kick it and stay? what difference does it make if they go to the greys heaven or stay in middle earth? is middle earth some kinda prison or something? (sure looked nice to me..or at least the shire did)
so correct me if i'm wrong the but elves then must be pretty important to the whole story?
i never read the books (and i don't intend to) but i do rememeber watching the hobbit as a kid and i loved that movie. so i kinda know who bilbo is and all that.

They're going to the grey havens. It's kind of like heaven, I guess you could say, and Frodo went because he was done with the rest of middle earth.

They went into the west. It's kinda like an idealized version of heaven. According to the books, it's where the elves (they're not fairies) go to live out the rest of their immortality. They get a sea lust when they hear the sea birds and the sea callls them to leave. It's kinda like the summerlands of pagan legends.
Frodo didn't HAVE to go. He chose to. He'd been just going for so long that he was tired. Bearing the ring the way he did for so long took quite a bit out of him. You add to that the morgal knife that he was stabbed with at the beginning of his journey and the sting from shelob and then having his finger bitten off only to lose the only thing that was keeping him alive to that point. Also remember, during the LOTR story he was in his 50s. He was not a young hobbit anymore. He looked that way because he'd had the ring in his possession since he was 33. But he had had enough by that point. And when he finally left the shire, he was well into his 60s. The journey may have only taken a year, but it took time to get the shire back in order after Saruman came in and destroyed it (which wasn't in the movie, btw) and then he had to watch all of his friends be honored in their home because of of that whole thing where he (who had been literally through the fires of hell) was just a tag along to his own people. How would you have felt?
Muzit, that was NOT the last ship to leave middle earth. Sam, Legolas and Gimili ALL went to the Havens. Gimili was the ONLY dwarf to have ever been afforded the opportunity. Some say it was because of the relationship he'd established between himself and the Lady Galadriel. Others say it's from his relationship with Legolas (they were close friends after the battle at helm's deep).

The Return of the King was part 3 and it is where Aragorn accepts his place as King. Something he has shunned in the previous 2.
Bilbo stayed with the fairies...to me it was like going away because the ownership of the ring had made him slightly insane. Not as far as Gollum went in his insanity. When Frodo ultimately saw the destruction of the ring he was released from the hold it had on him. In the first movie he was stabbed by the Ring Wraith and the fairies saved his life.
To fully comprehend the stories, you need to read the books as well. The movies did a great job, but they did leave out some key information.

Ok, many answers that are sort of correct, but one error that is repeated: They are going to the undying lands ... sort of, which is analogous to heaven. Specifically, the non-Elves were given transport to the Island of Avollone, which is not part of Aman (the mainland heaven), but is instead an Island that also offers immortality that lies right off of the coast.
Where they are not going (ultimately) is to the Grey Havens. The Grey Havens are in Middle-Earth, and they are the launching point for all departures from Middle Earth to the Undying Lands. The Grey Havens are actually much closer to the Shire than many of the events of the books/movies.
Frodo didn't have to go, but instead chose to go because he was never able to shake the feeling of doom after being pierced with the Nazgul knife.

Well I ll still answer your first question:
Frodo and Bilbo are considered to be a ring bearer because they were able to possess the ring. Bilbo was allowed by the Valars (angelic like beings but considered as Gods by the Humans) because he was able to let go of the ring by his own will. Frodo was also allowed even though he was corrupted by the ring because he took the quest to destroy it even though he knows that the quest will claim his life.... After the quest frodo is both wounded mentally and physicaly. The wound he recieved from the nazgul (guys in blackhood serving sauron) will never heal completely in middle earth. Also he was corrupted by the ring and needs to heal and it cannot be done in middle earth as his life is now altered by the quest. They were brought to Valinor the paradise of the elves and home of the Valars. There they both shall heal themselves and enjoy long life as the place grants them immortality. (Also additional info, Samwaise gamgee is also said to follow them to Valinor because he also was a ring bearer for two days. He was then reunited with Frodo
Second Question
No Middle-earth is not a prison. Galadriel and other Noldor Elves (Elves mostly under Galadriel's rule) disobeyed the Valars order no to go to Middle earth so the Valar took their chance of going back home, to Valinor..... Elrond goes back to be reunited with his wife and his kinsmen go back to be free from the burdens of middle earth....

They are going to the Gray Havens....When reading the book..I took it to mean a safe place for Magical Folk...Frodo and Bilbo can sail there because they carried the Ring....
By the way...because Sam also carried the Ring for a short time, if memory serves...(sometimes it doesn't)...He also goes to the Gray Havens after his life in the Shire....
Sounds very much like heaven to me!

aragorn becomes king after the armies of men defeat sauron. aragorn in the heir of the kings of gondor, so now he has rightfully taken his spot as king. at the end of the movie, the elves realize that their time has come to leave middle earth and continue onto the grey havens..where they will live forever, cuz their immortal...frodo, gandalf, and bilbo were invited to go with them, so yes its a form of heaven.
