One thing you could do is discuss the kinds of themes that various authors use in their works. For example, space travel, time travel, alien invasions, dragons, faeries, etc.

Some of my favorite authors are:
Isaac Asimov
Robert A. Heinlein
Frank Herbert
Larry Niven
Anne McCaffrey
Arthur C. Clark

Perhaps looking at some of their works would engender some new ideas.

May the force be with you!

Saying just "science fiction & fantasy" is WAY too broad. There are so many things that you can say about these genres! First, narrow your subject. What exactly did you want to write about? You also may want to limit yourself to just science fiction, or just fantasy.

How long is your paper supposed to be? Narrowing the topic also helps keep your paper focused. Don't try to take on too much, that will just make your paper messy and create a bigger headache for yourself.

Just a few sample topics:
- influence of science fiction/fantasy on modern day fiction
- influential writers in the genres, and what they contributed to the field of literature or to science fiction/fantasy
- the history of the genres
- common themes in science fiction/fantasy

Start with a paragraph on a science fiction story (or fantasy story or film) that you read or saw and liked. Say briefly why you liked it.

Then define your terms. What's the difference between science fictioin and fantasy?

Then say something about why the story worked for you. What elements — chartacter, plot, setting — seemed particularly well written? What gets you involved with the hero or heroince, or with the situation?

Keep asking logical questions and answering them, then end with your general conclusion (for exampe, what you will look for when yøu choose another book to read or film to see in this genre — or why, conversely, you are not attracted to this genre). Hint: make our essay a combination of personal involvement and knowledgeable criticism.

Well, you could go with something humorous, like "In a galaxy long ago, in a time far away..." or something like that, or straight statistics, like "there are over twenty three million people who want to write science fiction" or go for an emotional appeal like "science fiction movies and books sell because they allow us to suspend the rules of everyday life and travel time, and exist in a world limited only by imagination."

The opening will set the tone. How do you want to present the subject, as information, entertainment, or to get an emotional response?

It has been said that the communicator device from the "Star Trek" television show was the forerunner of the cell phone. And we are at the beginning of blurring fantasy and reality with the advent of virtual reality. Does science fiction and fantasy help us to "live long and prosper", or does it at least make the journey more pleasurable? My answer to both is a resounding yes!
