I know how hard it is to watch them come to you begging for food, only to have to turn them away. It's tough. Still, it's MUCH better for them to only give them food once or twice a day.
Never feed more than they can eat in five minutes at each feeding. If you don't have a great filtration system, you might want to change that to two minutes.
Over-feeding will cause huge swings in Ammonia and Nitrites. Those two chemicals will stress your fish and will quickly make them sick and can even cause them to die. Over-feeding is the quickest way to kill Koi.
I have a 10,000 gallon Koi pond with a very good filtration system and with lots of plants. It is a natural looking pond that invites lots of insects. I did not feed my Koi last year...Not even once. Not only did they survive, they grew well and they are healthy and happy. There are tons of bugs in my pond for them to eat.
As tough as it is, it is in the best interest of your fish not to overfeed. Good luck with that...It's a hard habit to break!

RE:
How often should I feed my koi fish?
I have a large pond (1400 gal) and about 15-20 koi and comets. Sometimes they seem so hungry that I feel bad and give them more food, but I've heard the goldfish will eat themselves to death if you feed them too much! Are Koi and comets the same? Can I feed them 3 times a day if they seem...

You have conditioned your fish to behave that way. Try this-- feed your fish at the normal time. Wait 15 minutes and approach the pond as if you are going to feed them.I'll bet they "act hungry". Koi and Comets do not make a good mix in a pond.Visit a couple of Koi websites,or forums and ask why. In a large pond there should be enough plant life, insects and other live stuff that your fish could go for a couple of weeks with out food and suffer no harm at all. It's impossible to starve a fish in a pond, but it's easy to kill them with too much food. One feeding a day is plenty, and it need not be a large one. Don't kill them with "kindness".

It would be better to just feed twice, and only give what they can eat in 2-3 minutes. If you want to add feedings, figure out how much they would eat in 2 2-3 minute feedings and divide this amount of food into the number of feedings you want to give them. This way they still get the same amount of food.
They should only be fed when the water temperature is over 50-55o. Otherwise they don't digest the food properly.
Koi (Cyprinus carpio) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) are separate, but related species, but when it comes to eating, they both always seem to be hungry!

WOW, you are overfeeding you rfish, but not to be rude, if you ask me, how can you tell your fish are hungry? My friend had a large pond of koi and kept them healthy by feeding them once a day, she fed them a few handfulls, and that was enough. I still am not positive, so i'de ask an employee at the fish store, but my friends koi were always healthy and happy. As long as you feed them enough at that one feeding, your fish will be ok

Your overfeeding your fish and this will kill them, if you have live plants in the pond they feed off the plants also, fish always act like they are starving, feed 2 times a week and dont worry your fish will be so much more healthy with less food, overfeeding also causes diseases in fish. Good luck
