If all you want to do is to connect the 2 PCs together to play games, then you only need to get a CAT-5 cable in a crossover configuration. The crossover cable will enable 2 PCs to "talk" to each other without the need for any hardware device in between. You should be able to get it from Radio Shack or whatever computer accessories shop.
Once you've got the cable plugged into the network cards in your 2 PCs, you'd then need to set the IP addresses to be within the same range. Assuming you're running Windows XP, do this by going to My Network Places and right-click on Local Area Connection, select Properties. In the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties button. Select 'Use the following IP address:'. In IP address, type in 192.168.1.101 for the 1st PC, and 192.168.1.102 for the 2nd PC. In Subnet Mask, type 255.255.255.0 for both PCs. You can leave Default Gateway blank.
Next go to Network Connections from your Control Panel and run the Set up a home or small office network wizard. Go through the steps making sure to choose your computer as one that connects to a network that does not access the internet. Also make sure that on both computers, you have put in DIFFERENT computer names, but the SAME NETWORK NAME. Restart both PCs and cross your fingers.
If however, you are looking to connect the 2 PCs to share an external network connection eg. the Internet, then you'd need to have a router. A router basically performs routing of network traffic from one network (your 2 PCs) to another (the Internet). Routers come in many shapes and sizes and some have only a single network port on them, so if you're getting one to connect both your PCs, then you'd need to get a router with more than 1 network port in it.

Either buy a Crossover CAT-5 Cable or if you have the capability to make your own cable, i.e. cable, RJ-45 connectors, and the tools. Yes once the computers are connected you can play LAN games, share internet connections, printers, etc.

relies upon the place the computers are and what connections there are between the computers. The flat out maximum inexpensive way is unplug the printer from one laptop and plug it into the different. that's loose yet a bore and could not paintings if the printers are miles aside. the subsequent maximum inexpensive is that in the event that they are the two on the comparable community. share it out from one laptop and on the different laptop connect a community printer. that's going to be on the IP handle or call of the printer that does the sharing and could have the call you shared it out as. you're able to desire to establish which you have report and printer sharing on the laptop doing the sharing out and the microsoft sharing customer on the different laptop. Then that's in undemanding terms a question of placing it up. enable sharing in homestead windows if it became into disabled perfect click the printer, opt for 'properties' and then the sharing tab. on the different laptop use the 'upload printer' wizard to characteristic a community printer. the two desktops could desire to be powered up for the only utilising the proportion to print... yet not for the only today under pressure to the printer to print. any other way will value you funds. suggestions are: Printer swap including networking between the two desktops community print server (by using then you particularly've spent lots funds a low priced printer could be greater low priced)

I think you will need a router to connect the 2 computers. Here is a link to an example of one.
