I've heard that in Smallville, Clark and Lois can not have a relationship because of copyrights. Is there any truth to this?

Its an "alternate" history of the Superman mythos, set in todays world. A kinda "what if" Superman was found in 1980 thing.
Its made and approved by DC, So anything goes.
Clark has already met and has a relationship with Lois Lane (friendly mostly), When its been clearly established they met far after Clark left Kansas. Metropolis is in Kansas when its always been a euphimism for New York Etc.
Bottom line "we" know Clark eventually ends up with Lois. However its fun to watch the drama of Clark's first love.

Nope, Lois and Clark all the way. A good couple supports and strengthens each other. Lana didn't make Clark a better person or aid him in becoming Superman. She actually held him back in many ways. She always wanted more from Clark than he was prepared to give in a relationship. Lois challenged Clark in ways Lana didn't. Lana always came off as someone needing to be rescued. Lois was kicking butt since her first grand entrance on the show. You could tell right away this was someone that could meet Clark on an equal footing even without powers. A big part of Lana's characer development was struggling with being able to take care of herself & overcome her damsel in distress stigma. She went to China & learned martial arts, became a witch, & gained a super power suit. But in my opinion, it didn't change her from having weak character. The show displayed many of Lana's failings in morality and her weaknesses. It's no surprise that the show even compared her to Lex Luthor the show's villain. Clark doesn't simply need someone to love. He needed a partner. Even with superpowers, Lana wasn't that person.

I don't see why they couldn't because the people who created Smallville screwed up so much of the history of Superman anything is possible

Not true about copyrights they can have a relationship that only rests in the film company, producers, and writers.

No, it's just of the "rules" the creators of the show made for themselves and the writers when they introduced her. It's along the same idea as the "No cape, no flying" think they've enforced from the beginning.
