They live in a number of states in the eastern US, from New York through Mississippi and Louisiana. Mostly they are found along streams or springs with moss and rocks or logs for them to hide under.

You can pretty much find the Red Salamander. along the eastern coast of America.

They're most common in the South East at sites with running water.

Adults are most frequently found beneath large cover objects such as logs and the like in areas that are relatively undisturbed.

The skin contains a toxin, called pseudotritotoxin that helps deter predators from attacking this otherwise gentle animal.
