One thing that many people don't realize is that bowling for the eighth straight year was the number 1 participation sport in America. Not golf, not hockey, not baseball, etc. Yes bowling. During the 60s-early 80s bowling was always on ABC, then the sport started to have a downturn in participation. Enter the late 90s to 2000s the PBA tour wanted full coverage on TV again, enter ESPN offering them a 5 year contract to cover their finals on Sundays. I know bowling doesn't have guys like Kobe Bryant, or Ladainian Tomlinson but for 80 million bowling enthusiasts watching Walter Ray, or Norm Duke on Sundays they get the same enjoyment that you do when you watch whatever sport you enjoy.

Actually a lot of bowlers play golf too... something about the backswing and the followthrough helps most bowlers with their form.
I'm a bowler myself, so I enjoy having bowling on espn and such. But I used to play hockey and sometimes wish that they would show hockey on tv.
Bowling has also gotten really popular lately, and the pro tour is still going on. so people enjoy to watch that.

Same reason why we see poker and other sports on TV. You you don't like it then don't watch it.

It's an expanding sport. More schools are picking up on it. NCAA is also promoting bowling. It's a fast growing sport for a younger generation who are looking for a free ride to college.

ESPN producers thought they could get a lot of young guy viewers by promoting a show with a lot of rolling around in the gutters.

For the same reason we have other non-sports like poker, competitive eating, and spelling bees on ESPN. Because their fans are lazy slobs who will watch anything.
