I watched both the Presidential address and the Democratic response. Both sides basically restated the same argument they have made for the last few weeks. It is clear that both sides know that there are not enough votes in Congress to override the veto. This means that right now, the advantage goes to President Bush. Until more Republicans are willing to support a timetable for withdrawal and override a Presidential veto, no such timetable will become law. The President knows this, the Speaker of the House knows this and the Senate Majority Leader knows this. Congressional Democrats pretty much have one of three choices: cut funding to the troops (which would look very bad), pass a bill that a decent number of Congressional Republicans support, or give the President a bill he will sign.

More of the same rhetoric. It's my way or the highway. If the poll numbers are right over 60% of Americans want out of Iraq and concentrate on Bin Laden. To do that, a timetable for getting troops out of Iraq, while to hawks is defeat, to impose timetables for Iraq to look after itself makes sense. For Bush to say that because democrats included a timetable for withdrawing SOME troops, means they don't support them is one of the most inane things he has ever said. Right up there with Mission Accomplished. Bush is denying the funding by vetoing the spending bill, not the democrats who are doing what they were elected to do, that is how a democracy works, majority rules.

Yes, I'm waiting for the excerpts on this one. It was not a major speech, and the text will be on the White House web site if I really need to read it.

Just to look at GWB let alone hear him makes me want to vomit. I'll pass. That part I will get through print media instead of TV or radio.
