Perimeter is a one-dimensional number
Area is a two-dimensional number

Perimeter is the measure of the distance around an object
Area is the measure of the 'area' of an object, enclosed by the perimeter of an object.

The area of an object is not dependant on the perimeter -- that is, the area may be the same for two objects with different perimeters.
