I know that the Taupo (New Zealand) Eruption of 1800years ago was seen in CHINA!!! and before that there was one of the biggest ever (I don't think it was THE biggest) explosions 26,500years ago.....Taupo is one of the supervolcanoes you hear about and has had some pretty big ones and the crater is now New Zealand's largest lake! I know it was bigger than the Tambora one....see the link

As far as scientists know, the largest ever was the 27.8 Ma eruption of the Fish Canyon Tuff at La Garita in Colorado, estimated at 3,000 - 5,000 cubic km.
Tambora in 1815 was the largest in recorded history, 100 cubic km.
