the last mermaid was said to be caught by the famous fisherman captain lewis utapau.
the race of mermen actually thrived after the death of the last mermaid. there underwater kingdom was said to have span across the entire pacific and atlantic ocean.
the largest it had ever been in 2000 years since the rain of the great king porcileon.
unfortunetly the race could not reproduce and the race became no more in the year 1308 a.d.

when early sea explorers would explore, they would see manatees, dugongs (order: sirenia). Sirenia aka sirena = mermaid in spanish. they would think that they were half human and half fish. but in realty they were just manatees and dugongs. and there you go!
