They can't anymore. The deadline for 2006 IRA contributions was April 15, 2007.

When making a contribution to an IRA, you have until the tax deadline each year to make a contribution for the previous tax year. This year the deadline was April 17, 2007 to file your 2006 tax returns (April 15 is typically the date but it was a Saturday this year, so they give you until the first business day after the 15th).
It is a neat little feature, but you missed if for this year. Keep it in mind for next year.

As people have said you can't for 2006, but why don't you put it in for next year? Putting in well into the next year might sound great, but you are basically missing most of the year that your money could be growing.
