The first successful (as in permanent) English Colony in North America was Jamestown (in Virginia).

New Foundland, Canada was the first known unsuccessful settlement. The Vikings settled there hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus. The Vikings left only after ten years of settlement. I don't know what the first successful colony was.
