First, there is not a single former slave alive today. If there were they would certainly be due just compensation for their labor, but the ancestors of atrocities do not deserve compensation in any way. As a precedent for this point of view, from the last century, let us look at how the compensation of slave labor during the holocaust of World War II has been handled. The thousands of people that survived that inequity are being compensated by both the government of Germany and by the companies that gained from their forced labor, and rightfully so. But their children have no inherited right to collect for the uncompensated labor of their parents. Certainly the grandchildren and great grandchildren of American slaves never experienced the appalling life of slavery, and therefore, like the children of Jews and others enslaved in Germany 50 years ago, they have no claim for themselves.

Secondly, blacks do not have a monopoly on living in poverty in this country. According to the latest census data approximately 30 percent of blacks and whites live in poverty. Hispanics unfortunately have an even higher percentage living below the poverty line. All this current day poverty can not be attributed to a disgusting institution that was ended 150 years ago. It can however be attributed to present day governmental policy. There should be a monumental effort made by the government, at all levels, to get all Americans out of poverty, but a policy centered on only one race is just as wrong as slavery was.

Thirdly, slavery could not have existed without the complicity of black Africans who supplied most of the unfortunate humans that were sold into this dreadful condition. It was not just whites that kept this retched institution going for over 200 years. In addition, there were over 200,000 white Americans that paid the ultimate retribution during the Civil War, when they gave their lives to end slavery. The reparation debt owed to slaves was paid a long time ago when the North won the Civil War and freed them.

First of all, why should the US Government pay reparations to descendents. The US government has done nothing in the life times of those seeking a windfall to constitute damages.

Secondly, believe it or not, not all slaves were mistreated by their masters. In fact, since they were considered as property, it gave them value to the master, unlike the indentured servent, who was held in servitude for a specific period of time, and then released.

Third, not all slaves were African. There are many accounts of white slaves in the history of the US. This is even without the consideration of the many Chinese Labor camps that had extremely arduous conditions under which they were a main labor force in building the railroad.

Fourth, realize that slavery in North America had occurred under the British crown for a couple hundred years before the Declaration of Independence. When you think that it took the sovereign nation of The United States of America to abolish slavery that had gone on for centuries only about 80 years, given the era and economic base at the time, was quite a civil rights victory.

Finally, the expense that the predominately black population of corrections institutions as well as the welfare roles of many urban population centers far exceeds the monetary damages that the oppressed Africans of 142 to 231 years ago suffered, even adjusted for inflation. It would be improper for a race or group of people to demand damages when their collective benefit has already exceeded their collective loss.

I am 100% in favor of civil rights and equality, regardless of race, creed, religion, sex, disabilities, sexual orientation, ethnicity, family composition or economic status. I must however be opposed to priviledge based solely on the same.

I think that former slave owners families should get reparations for the property that was taken away from them without compensation. Imagine if the Government took your tractor and your livestock and most of your liquid assets and then left you just your farm! I think those folks are owed some money with interest!

The other side has no logical reason. A lot of emotion only. Should be an easy debate if you begin by saying that you will not reply to any illogical statements.
