Hi, I’m moving to Dubai in the next couple of months from London. I’ve heard that there are restrictions on what kinds of media (books, dvds, etc) you can bring into Dubai. I was hoping to get a bit more guidance on exactly what is prohibited and what is not. I have a large collection of books and dvds on a variety of subjects so I need to sort out what I should ship over and what I should keep here.

If there are any reliable lists or quotas could you also please direct me towards those.

Please help. Thanks.

The link given by the answerer above is the best regarding Dubai customs.

Your moving company will provide you with a detailed list of all items which are prohibited to import to Dubai.

That's how I did it: Go through all your books and movies and sort out everything critical about Islam. For Example: NO Salman Rushdie, NO Princess from the house of Saud, NO not without my daugther etc, etc. Then look for books and movies about Jews and Israel in general. No Jacob the liar, No Schindler's list etc. Best thing is, nothing about Israel at all!
Furthermore sort out all book and dvd covers showing naked women or anything like that. No porn regardless!
To bring the Bible and religious books is allowed.

If you have a lot of books, dvds, etc. make an inventory list. This will help you later to check real fast if anything got confisicated.
When I moved to the UAE customs went through EVERY single box. All books, dvds and videos were transferred to another department to get approved and I could pick them up a couple days later.

Like it was said at the beginning, a moving company working international should be able to provide you with all kind of satisfying answers regarding customs.

Btw: also important! Check the medicine you might bring over. Many substances are considered illegal over here and can only be received in govt. hospitals. If you need a list of these items, please let me know.

Take care
