Two syllables are best. Do not pick name that can be shortened, like Alex, from Alexander. Or, Jarhead, if the name was actually Marine. Don't confuse the pet. Make an effort to find a name not attached to people and is not a common pet name. I suggest looking at a road atlas to discover unique place names to honor your animal with.
