I can't remember what a cherry barb looks like off the top of my head, but I did just a get a blue powder dwarf gourami this weekend. He stands out in the aquarium. Very colorful. I love how he curls his body into almost a cylinder shape.

I've only had him a couple of days, so I can't give you too many tips on care, but I can just let you know what I've done. First of all, the person at the pet store I bought my fish from said gouramis are territorial and aggressive towards each other, so one was sufficient (but I don't think that right, so I may have to go buy another one). I have fed him frozen brine shrimp and top fin flakes, so far. He has staked his territory in the bottom left of my tank in a little tree trunk looking thing. Overall, he's a pretty good fish.

EDIT: I think it's unanimous. The dwarf gourami wins.

Cherry Barbs do best in groups of at least 5... So I say Dwarf Gourami, 1 male and 1 female. Get a male and a female, because if there is just a male, the male will be aggressive.

Good Luck

Dwarf Gourami I feel is the better choice. My preference is based on coloration. Cherry Barbs would be great for keeping the tank clean, however, as one of the others had pointed out, they perform much better in groups of six or more. I have a pair of Dwarf's myself, and they have a very nice spectrum of color and sometimes they will almost like a cat, fluff thier fins up and chase each other in circles around the tank. That is the extent of thier "aggressivness" in my tank though. They readily eat flake and frozen cubes of brine shrimp and bloodworms. Easy to feed, nice colors, and fun to watch, Dwarf Gourami all the way.

For me the Gourami is more personable. It responds more readily to the owner. You need more than two Barbs to make the feel comfortable as they are a schooling fish.

Dwarf gourami if there's room in the tank. Colorful fish (I like the neons) and more peaceful than the larger versions. Barbs need to be in schools 6+.

the gourami, I hate all barbs. Though I don't have gourami if I had to choose it would be the gourami (I raise dwarf cichlids)

dwarf gouramis are my choice. Much easier to find compatible tankmates in my opinion.
