My manager who has never liked me and is just a very rude person, was chatting at lunch with another colleague and me and we both replied to the other girl's question together (OK maybe I was a bit after her but I just continued - I am older after all!), and she just fixed me with his long glare, at least 10 seconds. How would YOU react to this?

Tell her nicely that her face froze for a minute and gave you a fright.

I would sweetly and lightly apologize for over-talking her (being older doesn't give you permission to be rude!) - but using humor and lightness will cause the least amount of hard feelings or general attitudinal funk at work. Glaring back or being determined to be nasty and more hard core than she is only creates more negative tension between you and her. Why create more when she's already a little upset. Just give her a moment of attention, acknowledging her glare and move on!

I had a manager that was evil. Not just an evil person but the essence of evil embodied in the mortal plane. He'd stare with an evil look at all of us. One at a time, usually when you were alone. Sometimes for minutes at a time. It got to the point where I'd just stare right back, then he'd at least say something like, "Why are you so low?"

Well, since it's your boss you're kind of limited. You could have recognized it by saying, "Oh, I'm sorry. Did I do something wrong?"

As a note: good manners are not predicated on age, nor are bad manners excused by it.

if you interrupt alot maybe this is why they glare at you? im just guessing but that can be annoying when people interrupt alot, no matter what your age! just common courtesy.

say, "sorry have you got something in your eye? perhaps I should take a look for you" and get right up close and pretend to search for something in her eye, then say " nope, must be the stick up your ars* chafing " with a big grin!

Smile and revel in the fact that you answered what she couldn't, and look her right in her eyes.

I stare into their eyes and smile. If they continue to stare I keep my eyes on them and say, "can I help you?" or "Do you need anything?"
