For the most part, they can be given a commercial flake or pelleted food made for the type of fish that they are (goldfish, tropical, cichlid) as a staple food. Herbivores and omnivores can be given fresh veggies (romaine lettuce, spinach, kale, collard, zucchini, cucumber, oranges, peas) that have been blanched or frozen briefly to soften them, algae, and occassional grains (rice, oat, wheat) as treats. Carnivores and omnivores can eat brine shrimp, bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia (if smaller fish) feeder fish, insects, worms, crayfish, snails (if larger fish). This list is for freshwater fish.
Saltwater fish should eat foods that come from the ocean. There are flakes and pellets made for saltwater species that can be given as a main food, with seaweed, clams, mussels, brine shrimp, plankton, squid, krill, cockles, and pieces of saltwater fish.
Some fish have very specialized diets and will eat coral polyps, sponges, or other items which make them difficult to keep in a home aquarium.
Fighting fish (bettas) can eat any of the commercial pellets made for bettas, plus some bloodworms, brine shrimp or daphnia as treats.
