Silence is golden when:
1. You're completely exhausted and need to crash
2. You have a killer migraine and you just want the whole world to go away
3. Your baby has been crying for 3 hours straight
4. You just need to have some time to collect your thoughts
5. You need to get alone for something that is important to you- to read, to pray, etc...
BUT- Often in life, silence is not so golden:
1. When you are sitting in a waiting room
2. When your baby giggles for the first time
3. When you hear the peaceful sounds of a new day beginning
4. When you're home alone and you want something to drown out the loneliness or the spookies in your house
5. When you're driving home late at night and you can barely keep your eyes on the road and need the music to survive!!!
6. When you're in the mood to dance
7. When you've lost your hearing or been born without this precious ability
8. When you need to talk things out with a friend
9. When the phone rings and you are able to stay connected with those you love- even when miles separate you
10. When you need to hear someone say "I love you"
I'm sure there are many more... We all need to slow down sometimes and block out the "noise" in our life and enjoy those silent moments- but we should also be thankful if we still have the ability to hear all those beautiful sounds in the world around us!!!!

Yes, it is. Meaning it is golden of color, it is not made out of gold (since that would cause the price of gold to absolutely plummet!) yet curiously, despite being supposedly shiny, it is not distracting. Also, unlike gold or golden things, its beauty is not usually in itself, but rather in the absence of something else.
I can't remember the last time that I heard absolute silence.

I'll agree that it is to a mother with small children. It's also great when you meditate.
