Don't go for any designer "soap opra" names that's going to get your kid laughed at school with. Unique names are nice and if you don't want to honour anyone in you family by using a family member's name then at least try and steer clear of the "name of the year one".

Now I can appreciate if you have one too many Mary's or Sarah's in your life to use either of those names but just do some digging. Is there a particular heritage that you have? The name should flow and sound nice with the babies last name? No one can really give you that many ideas because then the name wouldn't really be unique. My friend's name is Raquel because her Mom always loved Raquel Welsh. Most people believe it or not don't remember Raquel they always want to call her Rachel because Rachel is more common. I have only met 1 in my lifetime so there's always an idea for you.

There are several site that can help you. I don't know how unique you want your name to be. One-of-a-kind or just a more uncommon name. Another suggestion is to look at names popular in other countries than your own.

A suggestion would be to run a name you like through the top 1000 names, you'd be surprised how common some of the "unique" names have become (the US list is here: http://www.parenting.com/parenting/pregnancy/tools/babynamer/categories/0,19973,639639,00.html

Everything old is new again. Choose an easy to spell classic that hasn't made a comeback yet!

Mary is always nice-as are the variations of Marie, Maria, and Maureen.

Ann is pretty and Annie is a really cute name for little ones.

No one names their kids Carolyn anymore and it's such a pretty name, you could call her Carrie.

Your child will be her unique self, no matter what. Why not give her a lovely, classic name that she can spell?

I have a friend named Britta(Bre-tah), it is a Danish name and different. My daughter's name is Emilyn(emma-Lynn), a cooler version of the popular name Emily. I also love the name Ashlyn. If you know your heritage, like italian or spanish, etc...you can look up names from your orgin. Good luck and enjoy your new little girl.

Liberty, Ashlyn, or Cadi. Those are the three I have thought about for my own and they are not common. My husband likes McKenzie, and even though it seems like I know quite a few of them myself, it is not very common from what the social security statistics say.
