The Lions already have nice WRs and need players at other positions.

It was actually a good move. They got the best player in the draft which is always a good thing. The receiving core isnt very good, they have Roy Williams who is very good and Furrey (a converted DB as the other starter). Beyond that the depth is poor. I agree they have a lot of needs but they have no chance of filling all of them so they should always take the best available player at each pick. If Johnson is as advertised then he creates matchup problems and coupled with Williams they will open up the running game simply by pulling the safeties off the line and forcing LBs to drop instead of playing tight in the box. Crazy as it may sound that is a great way to disguise other shortcomings, the O-line looks better even if they arent because teams cant cheat in on them and if they do and the Lions run draws they can easily burn the defense. The DBs are forced to run back to the line so they cant pick up the draw and the blitzers have to get to the QB which opens lanes. If that works out then the defense isnt on the field as much, again making them appear to be better than they may be. If the Lions can hit a couple big plays they force the other team into a more predictable offensive set so defending becomes easier 9they know what to expect). For a change they may have actually gotten it right (hard for me to say....I am a huge fire Millen fan!)

Roy Williams is great. Mike Furrey had a great year. Beyond that, they didn't have a WR with more than 200 yards receiving last year, including their FA pickup Shaun McDonald. Mike Williams is a bust & is either trade bait or is going to be cut.

The Lions did a pretty decent job of addressing their other needs throughout the rest of the draft and through free agency. Having Calvin Johnson opposite Roy Williams & Mike Furrey or Shaun McDonald in the slot will give opposing defenses fits & make things much more enjoyable for Jon Kitna, Josh McCown (assuming he's not traded), Drew Stanton and Dan Orlovsky.

I'm a Lions fan, I don't agree that we already have nice WRs. Roy Williams is great and Mike Furrey had an outstanding year. I don't know if we can count on a converted safety to be an explosive number 2 receiver. If you watch some of the games last year we lined up Josh McCown as a third receiver. He's a quarterback, that is pathetic.

That being said we do need a lot of other positions and I wouldn't have been disappointed moving down and picking up a Linebacker and OT. Hopefully CJ isn't a C-rog or Big Mike Williams.

some good points already made, but i have to think they were better off doing something else

first of all, matt millen has a history of drafting receivers very high, and that's always a big risk, although johnson is clearly the lowest-risk proposition of any player in the draft this year...he's failed with two of his first three projects and ended up tying up millions of dollars in worthless players who prevented him from being able to get other guys he desperately needed

i also agree with the fact that their wide receiving corps is decent, they have roy williams who is one of the best in the game and mike furrey had 100 catches last season...if they could develop a third receiver then they would have more than enough options, but it looks like they would prefer to pay johnson millions when they could have saved money and looked for someone else

i would have preferred to see them go after joe thomas or gaines adams, one way or the other...i think they fill much bigger needs than calvin does, although he is the most talented player in the draft

Well think about it

They signed Drew Stanton and Calvin Johnson. I like what I saw in Stanton....and well Johnson is just a demon out there. They needed OL...but whatever...They have, in my opinion, one of the best passing line ups in the league if they get better play out of their line...even with Kitna (Or Stanton)....Mistake? Nah...but I'm not sure WR was the answer to that franchise....

anytime you can get a guy like Clavin Johnson on your team, picking him will always be a smart move. The Lions also picked Stanton, who could turn into a very good QB, and could compliment Johnson very well down the road

They need someone to get the ball to those WRs...I think they were stupid to pass on Quinn at #2...Stanton is good, but Quinn is gonna be great in the pros...Matt Millen would be toast a long time ago if I was in the Ford family...
