I use aspen bedding for my hamster. The store I got her from uses it in all. Should I switch to paper? Aspen doesn't hurt hamsters, does it? Mine doesn't eat it or anything. Please help!

Aspen doenst hurt your hamster, it's the best bedding to use for them...
As for changing it in the winter...Don't!!!!! always keep them on apsen and give them some cotton bedding...
They'll make themselves comfy and put it whereever they want it...

EDIT:
DO NOT USE CAREFRESH!!!!! It causes respiratory infections in small animals...It's very dusty, it smells bad even before the hammy uses it, and it costs too much!!!!

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!!

I used Aspen hamster bedding before and it will not hurt your hamster at all!!! Don't use shredded paper 'cause they will eat it. In the winter... I would use a warmer bedding because Aspen is mainly "wood" but not harmful.

I looked online just to check that I knew what bedding you were talking about....and I would just part the bedding and spread it out all along the cage ect. Paper and newspaper...well my hamster eats it right away....so don't put that in you cage!

I'm sure when you go to the pet store, you will find a selection of warmer, fluffyer, hamster bedding for the cold winter.

But for now, Aspen is a wonderful product! Hope you enjoy your hamster and it's new life!

Ps: Anything else that is torn up such as newspaper, tissue paper, ect. will get inhaled by the hamster and will not be good for the little tiny critters' lungs. It's good that you checking to make sure that you have the right stuff!

Aspen is fine to use as a bedding. It is the most prefered of the wood type bedding materials. You don't want to use any bedding which may contain phenol.Phenol is the chemical which can cause hamsters problems.

Personally I swear by 'safe bedding' from Petsmart for my rodents - that's basically soft, thich recycled paper. It comes in little squares and is quite cloth-like. It's digestible and not dusty. Hamsters don't have to eat bedding for it to be harmful - cedar or pine shavings can be toxic just by being there.

I hadn't heard of Aspen bedding before so I looked it up - and discovered there appears to be a bit of a question mark hanging over its use at the moment. Here are the articles:

Personally I wouldn't use any bedding had safety doubts associated with it, just to be completely on the safe side. I haven't found any such doubts about Safe Bedding.
