The story is he shot himself and his wife. But if you really want to hear the story of what happened and all the evidence to support or disprove these theories, watch the following program on channel 120 (the History Channel).
It airs this Friday night at @ 7:00 pm (PST) and again at 11:00pm. It's called "Cities of the Underworld".
It's all about Hitler's underground bunker hidden in the streets of Berlin. It tells of the different stories of Hitler's last moments and then uses forensic methods to find the real truth. It is a very interesting program and it should give you the information you seek.
He did shoot himself but you need to watch this program to be able settle this argument.

After bidding farewell to staff and close advisors Hiler and Eva Braun closed themselves off in his quarters. Braun took cyanide and Hitler shot himself to death (he may have also shot Braun). Their remains were taking into the garden outside the bunker and placed in a shallow trench. They were then doused with gasoline and partially burned. The reason for the partial burning is because the soldiers charged with the task left before completing the cremation as rumors were heavy that the Russian forces were very near.
It is believed Soviet soldiers found his remains and removed bothe bodies to be disposed of at an undisclosed site so as not to become a Nazi shrine.

Here's the skinny from Wikipedia
"On 30 April 1945, after intense street-to-street combat, when Soviet troops were spotted within a block or two of the Reich Chancellory in the city centre, Hitler committed suicide in the Führerbunker, shooting himself while simultaneously biting into a cyanide capsule.[53][54] Hitler's body and that of Eva Braun (his long-term mistress whom he had married the day before) were put in a bomb crater,[citation needed] doused in gasoline by Otto Günsche and other Führerbunker aides, and set alight as the Red Army advanced and shelling continued.[53]"

Adolf Hitler married Eva Braun on April 29,1945 . The following day when he came to the conclusion that the war was lost gave a final speech and he and Eva went to their sleeping quarters where he gave his favorite dog Blondie a dose of cyanide and when the dog had died. presented to Eva the cyanide She took it believing she would be at his side to the end (actually she came to that conclusion on March 7th when she left Berschtesgarden and entered the Bunker which she believed was her destiny to be with him to the end.)Adolf shot himself in the head and eventually both he and Eva's bodies were burned by gasoline .

The official cause of death is that he shot himself in the head. There are rumors and some believe that he is still alive (as there are always rumors like this i.e. Elvis etc). He was in a bunker and blew his brains out after Eva Braun took poison i believe. There was also an attempt on Hitler's life years before during a briefing, they tried to blow him up, but the bomb was misplaced and a large table muffled the blast.

He shot himself in the head. he had left instructions for his body to be burned, so that the russians, who were at the door could not get it. This was duly done! He fed his German
shepheard dog a cyanide tablet before doing himself in.

According to Hitler's bunker museum near the Reichstag in Berlin, Hitler gave Eva Braun some cyanide, watched her go unconcious, then went outside and shot his two beloved Alsatian shephards with his Luger. He then came back in, saw Braun's corpse, and shot himself in the head. No burning.
His guards outside the doors heard the shots and reported this in, I beleive, the Nuremberg Trials.
Russia allegedly has some of Hitler's body.

According to the last History Ch documentary, he took a cyanide capsule, then shot himself in the head; his body was burned by German troops to keep it from the russians who eventually recovered parts of it.

They are both wrong. Hitler shot himself in the head while taking a cyanide capsule. Later some of his men carried out his instructions to burn his body. They had to identify him by dental records.
