Hop this helps Dora, sounds like the reverse band is out of your transmission. Start the vehicle, let it run a minute, and check the fluid level as well as the condition of the the fluid. Does it smell burnt? Is the level on the dip stick o.k.? If it appears normal then chances are its the reverse band.

I assume by the way you stated that, its an automatic tranny. First things first, check the fluid in the transmission. The fluid level is typically checked with the car running and in neutral. If you pull out the dipstick, it will likely have instructions as to how they want you to check it, as well as the proper fill levels when hot/cold.

If fluid is full and you are still having problems, does the car actually feel like it is changing at all? Meaning, if you drop it in neutral, can you push the car around? I ask this because there may be a small chance that the shifter linkage popped off and simply it not shifting gears.

Third, and worst case scenario, either your transmission or torque convertor are shot. Either way, it requires removing the transmission... $$$$$$$

Clutches went out in the transmission? If the shift lever felt normal when you put it in gear, then it sounds like an internal problem and will cost you some cash. Get it towed to a repair shop or have it towed to a dealer and trade it in. good luck

There could be different reasons. The only sure way to know is by taking it to a certified mechanic. it could be as simple as the shift cable, or it could be a bad transmission. The best thing to do is to tow it to the closest REPUTABLE repair shop.
