My Mazda 2 1.4 would probably do it, but I'd be more inclined to go for something like a Focus/Astra/Golf sized, and with a Turbodiesel engine, as they have the torque to pull a car and caravan up hills with ease.

2.5 diesel. I tow with a landrover discovery. Towing with a discovery does not effect the mpg. The benefit is the easy at which it tows on motorways or hills. The height gives vision over the cars ahead. Ideal for towing in Europe where diesel is much cheaper than UK prices. .. but what isn't cheaper in Europe?

"with the small highland roads and steep hills and inclines",
I would hope that you don't tow a caravan, leave it at home or don't even buy it. There is enough traffic on the roads without caravans clogging up small and steep roads, thanks.

Allow 100 hundred weight per 1000cc + 1000cc for the car.
Load forward of the caravan axel. Do not close 'van rear curtains, for rear vision. Fit extended wing mirrors on the car.
Ensure correct "drop" on tow bar.
Happy motering.

Trailer or Car?Weight on hitch is usually what determines towing ability,Cars are too light. You need a rear wheel drive truck with trailer brakes. Most minivans are rated for 1500 lbs or less.Check with a hitch installer or read your owners manual.Make doublly sure you have adequate brakes, the trailer will jack knife easily without them on the trailer.

A small diesel SUV would be sensible - perhaps a Hyundai Tucson or the mechanically similar Kia Sportage.
