I saw a show on Dog evolution on PBS. There was a russian experiment with foxes, the ones that were tamer were breed. Soon, the foxes were changing skin color. The show briefly said testosterone and melanin were similar in chemical make up, and that is why the skin color changed. I told my doctor father and he didnt believe me. Anyone know where I can back this up on the web?

Melanin is a complex polymer that is synthesized in dark pigmented melanocytes of the skin. It is biosynthesized from L-dopa that itself originates from the amino acid tyrosine.
Testosterone is a sex steroid and has a very different chemical make up.
However, melanin synthesis is influenced by testosterone levels that control the enzymes necessary for melanin synthesis.

Although melanin and testosterone are totally different in chemical make the one controls the production of the other.

Testosterone is a steriod hormone (formed in the Leydig cells of the testes), and is derived from cholesterol.
Melanin is a pigment, basically an aggregate of smaller component molecules, based on the amino acid tyrosine. However, there are different forms of melanin that confer different colors to the individual producing it. For example, there is a copolymer called pheomelanin that imparts a red color.

I am afraid you will find the same answer.
Testosterone has nothing to do with melanine,.
Testosterone is a derivative of steroids (derivatives from the natural existing cholesterol) produced in the suprarenal glands, and in the testicles.
Melanin is a pigment that colors the inside of the cells of the skin (not hair) and is derivated ftom the aminoacid tyrosine...the globules of this substance makes one skin look darker that others...for example albinos lack almos completely of this substance..
No, there is not a site in the web that supports your theory, and even less so, in the web..
