Northern Ireland is part of the british isles ( along with the isle of man, guernsey and the scottish isles etc.). It isn't part of mainland britain.
Northern Ireland is part of the European union along with the rest of the british isles.
Check a map of the world and you'll see the borders and if it's old enough you can tell the british isles by their colour (back when it actually was great britain)
