An NVQ is a national vocational qualification. There are no exams and you build up a portfolio of evidence to show your competence. Because it is a vocational qualification, the evidence is gathered by an Assessor who would need to see you in your work place. Therefore it is not classroom based and you could not do it at college. If you can find somewhere that will do it for free (try Train to Gain contract run by the Learning and Skills Council) you may be able to convince your employer that it won't cost them anything and will not take up too much of your time. Explain that it will also improve your performance! Worth a try.

I'm a Housekeeping Manager and i have always pushed my team into doing a course, it's nice to see that someone is interested in such a hard working job. Your company should be able to pay the course fees if any, go and see your HR and they will advise you on a course to take. If you choose an NVQ you will have a tutor visit your hotel and go through your course work

Yes of course you can.

Your employer pays you for working 40 hours (or whatever) after that your time is your own ..

What you do in your own time (eg. evening class, Open University etc.) is your own business (although they do tend to take a dim view of any criminal activity :-) )
