We heat our home with a wood burning stove and in the winter we dumped our ashes in the kiddie pool full of water because we didn't want to dump them in the trash or on the grass. Now we are going to dump it in the yard but my mom said that ash and water are caustic and dangerous and that we need to find a safer solution. Would it be bad to just dump it all in the yard?

Are you kidding? What happens when we burn down forests? Do we dispose of the ashes? NO. The ashes actually make the soil richer for a small period of time. The chlorine in the water would have mostly dissipated by now (if you even put chlorine in it in the first place) so that is not a problem either.

Next time just dump it in the yard so you won't have to clean out your pool like that again.

Ashes mixed with water makes LYE- an alkali, which is great if your yard is acidic, but not if it isn't; and can burn your skin/eyes.
Buy a firesafe can/bucket for next year's ashes.
Don't dump it!
Call the disposal company or a hardware store to find out how to dispose of your lye solution. [ don't dump it in a stream, lake, or storm drain - it goes in the water supply and will kill the fish.]

It will fertilize the yard. Growing up we always put the ashes where our garden would be.

Mom is right about it being caustic. Used to make for my mom and sis when they made hominy.
