Oh GERBILS!! They are SO much better than hamsters. Yes, hamsters are cute, but so are gerbils! Gerbils are much less aggressive, gerbils hardly ever bite. Hamsters tend to bite a LOT.

Also, hamsters are really nocturnal. They want to sleep all day and get VERY GRUMPY if you wake them up. Gerbils are awake all day, so they can play with you.

I raised gerbils for years, they are very sweet, funny, adorable critters!

A pair of gerbils. Gerbils are crescepular (nappers awake night and day). They are social so you can keep a pair in one housing and because they are desert animals they drink and pee very little. Their cage can go two weeks between cleaning. They love to come out and play any time, but are fun to watch in the tank too as they build tunnels, play together, and gnaw stuff up. In general gerbils are more bold, curious, and less temperamental than hamsters.

Whether you decide on gerbils or a hamster, get your pet from a small scale hobby breeder who has spent time playing with the babies so that they are tame and friendly from the start. Here is a breeder listing for gerbils:

AH! I don't know why everyone says hamster. I've had 5 gerbils (each lived 3-3 1/2 years). They are sooo much better! Hamsters tend to bite more, while gerbils rarely bite! HAMSTERS ARE MEAN!

Gerbils.

I have 2 they are more social and active. They are also more active during the day and they don't need cleaning out as often.

I have had hamsters too so I can compare.

Gerbils for sure.
Hamsters are more agressive, where as gerbils arent. You can get more than one gerbil (you should), and they are awake during the day (unlike hamsters). Dont uuy something just because its cute, gerbils live longer and are generally better pets. (plus hamsters STINK)

I think gerbils are better as pets. They are less likely to be aggressive and much easier for small children to handle. Hamsters are natural biters and require more time to "warm up" to their owner. I've had both and gerbils have been the best!

Gerbils because they are cute and don't smell, unlike hamsters which do!
