I just got my results on my MRI and it says that there is:
linear tear of the posterior horn, lateral meniscus extending to the inferior articulating surfacer laterally. The medial meniscus is intact.
There is no thinning of the cartilage over the femoral condyle. There is small joint effusion in the suprapatellar bursa. There is no abnormal marrow signal intensity.

Can someone tell me if this will heal on its own? Going to a doctor is going to cost me a lot so I'm kinda holding off on it. If I wait too long will it get worse? I've been walking on it for more than a month now.. The only improvement I've seen is the swelling has gone down.

you have a lineal tear, that isn't going to get better on it's own.
Over time and continued use and wear, that tear will extend and get much worse creating more damage....as for paying a doctor, it's a matter of pay him now or pay him alot more later.

First of all, didn't you have to see a MD in order to have a MRI? (State laws and such about who can order the test!) So you and/or your insurance already owe about $1000.

True a linear tear in a skeletally mature individual will not heal on its own. An orthopedic surgeon would remove the flap through a simple arthroscopic surgical procedure. Since it is a lateral meniscus and no reason to rush, return to sports in about 6 weeks.

In an adolescent (approx age 16 or younger) lateral meniscus SYMPTOMS may clear on their own if given a chance. Thus you don't rush and 'scope a junior high athlete just because they have lateral joint line pain.

if you keep going with this problem, your knee will get worse. what will happen is the flap of meniscus, which used to be intact, will be flopping around causing more and more damage to your knee. it will accelerate the process of arthritis, not to mention a ton of pain, when you could just fix it now and be done with it in 4-6 months if you follow the docs instructions
