I have been trying to explain this to my 11 year old daughter!
the mayan indians made their calendars years in advance, when they died out, no one was there to carry on making the calendars, therefore the calendars stopped at this date.
just because the calendar of the mayans is going to run out, doesn't mean the world is going to end. it's like if thorntons shut down, it wouldn't be the end of chocolate!
hope this helps, it's the simplest way I could think of to tell my daughter

Well, while I am all for giving credit to the Mayan Indians and their highly developed civilization, I do not recall reading that they had developed a "Space Telescope" like the Hubbel, or sent "Space Probes" to the far reaches of the Solar System like the Americans, the Russians, and the Europeans. So,
when it comes to predicting what will happen in 2012, which is not that far off now, I think it would be more adviseable to rely on information reported by those sources.
In point of fact, however, before we ever get to 2012, we must first get over the hurdle of the US Presidential Elections in 2008. At this time there is a ground swell opinion that a candidate named Hillary Clinton might win the Election and become the first female President of the USA. Well, all sexual considerations aside, her ability to perform as Commander and Chief of the US Armed Forces seems a bit far fetched and tenuous at best. Based upon the Democratic clamor for George Bush's ouster from the cat bird seat in Washington, DC, there is a very good possibility that she could win the election. If that should happen, the clamity that your friend forcasted for 2012 will surely occur in 2008 based upon misguided directions from this female dingaling from Arkansas. Advise your friend to stock his bomb shelter with provisions and water sufficient to last for several years right now. He is certainly going to need them.

First, this isn't the end of their calendar, merely the end of a cycle. Admittedly, this is a pretty significant end -- the cycle lasted over 5,000 years. But, that just means a new cycle is about to begin, similar to how a new milennium began for us in 2000.
Second, if the Mayans were more prescient, I think they'd have not thought of the conquistadors as White gods. That fatal error allowed Cortes to destroy their once great civilization.

the world will end metaphorically speaking....its not going to blow up or anything like that...there will be changes that's all...according to the Mayas we are living in the "fifth sun" and will enter the "sixth sun" in december 2012....in other words we are living in the fifth age and will enter the sixth age. this means the world as we know it will end...like when the dark ages turned into the renaissance....when the 1900s became the 2000's......that's what they meant....people just take everything too literally

I tell you what. If you believe this, just before the date can you assign all your worldly goods to me. They'll be no good to you.
You would be surprised how many idiots have actually done this in the past because some cretin has told them the world will end.
Do you want to be in that class?
Want to see how many crackpots have foretold the end of the world, and it had come to nought? Then go here...

You'd be right not to trust that friend, since it's only ignorant conspiracy theorists who think that. Really, think about it. The Mayans knew when the world was going to end, but couldn't tell that they were going to be wiped out?
Nothing is going to happen. No actual scientist would believe that bullshit.

Great, if you have more confidence in Indians of a thousand years ago, more than you do in modern scientists. I'll go with the scientists.

If we had end-of-the-world parties at the expiration of every calender, we would have to have them monthly. On second thought, that might not be such a bad idea. . . .
