it could be argue that it's a hypothesis due to the limited evidences however with new evidences been added over the years it would seem to be developing into a plausible theory.
for eg. it's a known fact that the galaxies in general are expanding away from each other which would implied that in the pass they were closer and if you go back far enough approx.13 billion years ago all the matter, energy, space and time were confine to a very small area.
the hot big bang theory is not complete but it's evolving as new infomation comes in and when it's eventually is completed it will give us a better understanding of the universe.
there is a Unified Theory of Everything been piece together right now by mainstream phyisicist which involves combining the theory of relavitity and quantum theory (both of these theories have there basis on extensive observations and undeniable proof). T.O.E. will fill in all the gaps.
it quiet possible that the hot big bang theory is wrong and a new theory might form but a lot of the big bang theory evidences will be use to create a possible new theory.
i personally find the big bang theory far more plausible even with the gaps then believing in magic or a god

A hypothesis is an assumption and speculations. Even though you need a hypothesis to come up with a theory.
A theory is supported by evidence, in explaing certain
phenomenas.
IE: The big bang THEORY is satisfactory in explaining phenomenas, such as microwave radiation background.

The Big Bang is a 'theory' because there is much physical evidence to support it. A 'hypothesis' would have little or no physical evidence to support it.

It should not be called a theory since it cannot be proved or disporved usng the scientific method. It cannot be ovserved, repeated, tested, etc.
It is therefore more accurate to call it a hypothesis.
In fact there is much evidence that does not fit easily with the BB hypothesis. They have had to invent constructs such as dark energy, dark matter, inflation, etc, which have no observational basis. They are needed to make it all 'work'.
Check out here for loads of articles - some fairly technical - on the subject. A view that Bib Bangers don't like to talk about.

I is also worth noting that BB relies on the unproven Copernican principle. This assumes that the universe has no centre and no edge. This is an arbitrary assumption - again with no observational basis.
There is much evidence that suggests the BB hypothesis is incorrect. Trouble is, some people will believe in anything except the alternative of creation. They'll even believe that the universe simply appeared out of nothing. Quite bizarre really.

It is a theory, which, in the scientific usage of the word, means it is established, backed by evidence, testable, and predictable.
It is not a hypothesis - a hypothesis is an idea which has not been tested. Theories have been tested and are backed with evidence.

It is a theory. There is a complex, testable (through observation) model of the evoluton of the universe. However, it is just on theory. There are other possible theories that could support the evidence, especially as new evidence comes in.

Theory means Hypothesis. Hypothesis means theory. As the big bang theory is called a theory it means that yes it is a hypothesis
