Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I am interested in a computer featuring an AMD 5000+ processor, i want a good video card, also a 500gb hard drive and 2gigs of ram. A TV Tuner would be a bonus. I noticed the HP package that I want is $1100 without a monitor; but the Dell package that comes with a 20" monitor is only $1049. Why is that?

Cheap parts and and poor customer service is the dell way, and they over price all the upgrade parts to make up what was lost in the cheaper system. I hate dell computers because they are not upgradeable to new technology. Dell locks out features that must people want to use in the bios such as overclocking. It is best to have a custom built computer so you get what you want and not pay for things you may never use. Hp is the same as well as sony. When you see a deal like the one you mentioned (20') monitor it's because they offer it as a free upgrade, but you will lose out on the hard drive or memory. I am a computer repair tech and have worked for dell for years before going into business for myself. I have been in business for over 15 years, and I get more dells in my shop than any other system.

Check yer consumerreports.org and eopinions.com and pc magazine and other reviews. HP consistently comes out on top (IBM comes out above HP..., Toshiba next down...)

On the other hand, watch out as time goes by. Dell has ideas. And they may end up being (they don't just yet...) a PC with *only* the software needed to run the PC (Windows) and not all the other advertising crap (Easy Internet Access, Earthlink, AOL, Norton Trial Version, Office Trial Version, games trial versions, and on, and on...)

Dell has one of the most advanced supply chains in the wold, with receipts of components three times daily. They have almost no overhead on inventory, which allows them to remove cost from the product itself.

They also do "deal of the day" type buying, so they don't necessarily have the same components from build-to-build. If you're buying a computer based on basic specs, this is not normally an issue.

dell is giving you what you want you think try upgrading you wont be able to its priortized on the cheaper units try going to the more exp. units where you can upgrade you will pay the same there xps is very good but it also is costley but you wont have to upgrade 2 or three years from now like you might with the less expensive unit

I am assuming you are getting this system for gaming or video editing/rendering. Overall it looks like a good rig that will play the newest games out there. I would say that's a pretty good price for what you get. You could try pricing out how much it would be to build it yourself like in the first post.

Because they use cheaper parts (amd vs intel), cheaper labor & try to undercut the competition by taking lower profits but gaining them back with greater sales volume. + most "freebe's" offered by companies aren't worth squat, they are just a comeon to get you to buy, & in most cases they get the customer to upgrade the freebe to a more expensive version.
