Yesterday i saw a magpie eating the brains of a pigeon. would this be classed as cannibalism or not? are they classsed as a different species? Or would it fall under the same species umbrella?

This is absolutely not cannibalism. Cannibalism is when something eats its own species.

I am sure that a naturalist would tell you that this is not cannibalism. They are definitely different species. It is like a human eating an ape [and in some parts of Africa they do].

I don't think it's considered cannibalism if they're different species of birds. Birds of prey such as eagles and hawks often eat other birds, but as far as I know they don't eat their own kind, so I wouldn't call that cannibalism.
