I think Oliver Alan flows better than Olly Alan. I would stick with Oliver Alan and use Olly for the nickname (which by the way is a cute nickname).

I love the name Oliver, but sorry, hate the nickname Olly. If you're going to shorten it to Olly then I would suggest naming him something else. How about:
Logan
Colby
Seth
Mitchell (Mitch)
...all of these would go well with Alan as the middle name.

I love the name Oliver, not so sure about Alan but I understand your keeping that to honor your father. Please give your son the name Oliver and just use Olly as a nickname. Olly really leaves alot to be desired as a given/formal name. I doubt he'd be taken seriously later in life.

Oliver is a better choice than Olly. When he gets older he may not want to be known as Olly. Plus, if he becomes a big time business man (think Donald Trump) an Oliver would be taken more seriously than Olly (think- would you buy real-estate from Donny Trump?? or do you take Donny Osmand seriously?? I think not!)
Good luck with your son!! And Congrats!!!

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, but, I would stick to the actual name as Oliver. Remember, he is gonna grow up and try to get a decent job.. Olly doesn't sound like a doctor or lawyer kind of name. let him choose how long he wants to be Olly and when to grow up and go with Oliver.

Stick with the name Oliver just because when he gets older and in the proffesional world he isnt going to want to be called Olly. but its good for school and stuff.
