I have a 50-60 ft. tree in the center of my back patio and onto it I am training various types of morning glories and moonflowers (evening glories).

As these start to come in and fill the trunk of the tree with their green heart-shaped leaves and multi-colored flowers I'm wondering what I should plant in the rest of the border around the tree.

The area will be partial sun (3 hours) / partial shade (4 hours) and the soil will be moderately dry and well drained.

I'm open to all range of suggestions from flowers to ferns, I'm just trying to figure out what would look best.

Hostas and impatiens would look really nice. Impatiens give you all kinds of color all summer. I also planted a perennial called Lamium.. pretty low ground cover with silvery variegated leaves and either purple or white flowers similar to small snap dragons.Hope this helps...happy planting.

Right away, morning glories and moonflowers might have trouble climbing a tree. They aren't the kinds of vines that climb things like that without a little help. You might have to put some strings or wires up to help them get started.

Also, if you don't watch out, it won't matter what you plant, the vines will just cover them up. I've pretty much gotten rid of any morning glories I had growing around the place because they just turned into kudzu with flowers, overgrowing everything else.

I agree with them being invasive! But some people like them, so have at!
I think a variety of ferns and/or hosta's would look nice back against the trunk and in front of them maybe some allysum, pansies, etc.
