Stamp collecting is a dieing hobby. Most stamps issued in the last 50 years are not worth face value if you tried selling to a dealer. If a country ceased to exist, the last issues would probably appreciate in value. Other historical events could also cause a stamp to increase in value but this is impossible to predict.

It depend on which countries You will start to collect.
To accumulate new issues, from countries that have big quantity printed, of each new issue, You will just wast Your investment.
BUT - if You will start collection, with strict "filter" of which countries, or which topic - You can reach "positive" balance to the future.
I will suggest to avoid countries with millions of copies from each issue, think/analyze about which topic have "good sale" on public auctions, and according it make decision.
Don't vast money on collecting "by way" - here You will not receive even 10% of invested!
And try to collect "small" countries, "politically hot" countries and see on auction sites which topic have good sale.
With this parameters, after 5-6 year, You can be positive - not before!
Again - all depend on You and Your proper decision, but if You invest with strict decision to made profit from collection - You will be in "red"!

Not likely. Collect because you love something. Collecting with an eye toward financial gain always backfires, in my experience.
