The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and Christianity in general.

Basically it's the day that Christ rose from the dead, and descended into heaven. The Friday before Easter Sunday is known as Good Friday and is supposively the day that Jesus was crucified. He was then put in a tomb for 2 days and he came back to life on Easter day.

here's an excerpt I found about Easter:

"Like pagans, Christians celebrate the end of death and the rebirth of life; but instead of focusing upon nature, Christians believe that Easter marks the day that Jesus Christ was resurrected after spending three days dead in his tomb. Some argue that the word Easter comes form Eostur, the Norse word for spring, but it’s more likely that it comes from Eostre, the name of an Anglo-Saxon goddess."

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from death, his breaking of Satan's total bond of eternal death. Descending to Hades Jesus freed those righteous individuals for their rewards in Heaven and thus providing us passage to eternal life with God. Jesus Christ did not ascend into Heaven until 40 days later, the Ascension. Prior to his departure he promised a helper, the Holy Spirit who came 10 days later (Pentecost), to the diciples to enable them to spread his message throught out the word, thus the begining of the Christian church.

Originally, it was a pagan celebration of the spring equinox. The goddess of springtime was even named Eastre. The Christian faith "borrowed" it. Just like they did Christmas. To over shadow the more primitive religions and make themselves top dog. It appeared to work. They added in their own Jesus explanations.
