The problem with having a hole in the septum between the two atria is that the deoxygenated blood in the right atrium can mix with the oxygenated blood in the left atrium. Therefore, the blood pumped by the heart would contain less oxygen than usual, so some parts of the body might not get enough to continue to work.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a form of congenital heart disease that enables blood flow between the left and right atria via the interatrial septum. The interatrial septum is the tissue that divides the right and left atria. Without this septum, or if there is a defect in this septum, it is possible for blood to travel from the left side of the heart to the right side of the heart, or vice versa.

Because the deoxygenated blood is not getting to the lungs for re-oxygenation, and is going back into the bloodstream (going straight from the right atrium into the left atrium).
(Proper pathway of bloodflow: Blood from superior and inferior vena cavae - right atrium - right ventricle - pulmonary arteries - lungs for oxygenation - pulmonary veins - left atrium - left ventricle - into arteries and to the muslces and tissue)
There will be a continuous build-up of CO2 in the system, and the muscles and tissues will slowly die because they are not getting the oxygen they need from the blood.
