Catalysts are atoms or molecules . which affect a chemical reaction without themselves being consumed or altered in the reaction. Bio-catalysts are molecules effective in physiological reactions. The most abundant of these bio-catalysts are the proteins called enzymes, which serve to promote almost all biochemical reactions in plants and animals.

A few such enzymes important in the human digestive system are the endopeptidases, Pepsin,(secreted in the gastric juice of the stomach), trypsin and chymotrypsin (secreted into the small intestine by the pancreas) which catalyze the breakdown of long amino acid chains (proteins) into smaller peptides.. Exopeptidases secreted by the pancreas into the small intestine catalyze the lopping off of individual amino acids from peptides. One such is carboxypeptidase. These are all bio-catalysts.
