Maybe you have a dog in your house curious to know whats inside the cpu :) joke apart... it might be the following:
1. You have a scratched CD /DVD inside the cd/dvd reader.
2. HDD collecting data, happend if your system is really old.

That's the sound you get when you little babe of a processor gets all those protons and neutrons to do their thing. Learn to find it soothing knowing its doing it for you.
..or, you got some friction with a fan that's drying up..that's not so soothing.

At what point? Could be the hard drive banging, or one of the fans hitting against something. Put your hand on the box and try to feel where it is coming from and then see what is located there (Drive, processor, fan, etc).
